Q. I have a 2.8TD Triton that I have been setting up with accessories for quite a while now. It gets used every day lugging my gardening equipment around for work, and on weekends I try to get out with the boys fishing and camping as much as possible. I have just purchased a second-hand camper trailer to tow on these weekends bush, but have come across a problem. Without the trailer on it’s slow but manageable, with the trailer on it’s so painfully slow that I feel ashamed taking it out onto the highway! In your experience is there much you can do to get these engines working any better – bigger turbos, exhausts, etc? Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated, because I’m about to put the trailer back up for sale and buy another tent!
A. Pretty reliable choice of vehicle there. I am not the biggest fan of huge engine mods and so would advise to at first get the Diesel fuel injection system tuned. This should incorporate re-building of the injectors (and I mean properly with all pressures equal and the nozzles hand lapped for a super fine spray pattern), fine tuning the pump if needed on the vehicle (highly unlikely it needs re-building so don’t let anyone say it needs a re-build or the dollars will immediately mount up), check and flush the fuel lines, check the turbo and if needed I find they usually need adjusting up 1 or 2 PSI, and finally test the vehicle. End result should be a spritely 4 Cyl Diesel with an average fuel consumption and reasonable power.
