FUEL INJECTION PERFORMANCE TUNE
- Injector spray patterns are set by hand, using the 'Old School' technique, to a level that burns our poor quality Australian diesel.
- Pressures are set to the maximum specification and are equal across the set of injectors. Haphazard settings are NOT accepted here. Taking the time to achieve these precision settings is what sets us ahead of the rest.
- Fuel lines and strainers are inspected and cleaned.
- Valve clearances are adjusted and set on ONLY 4.2 patrols.
- If the vehicle has a turbo, we check its operation and set this to match the rest of the system.
- Once this procedure is complete the vehicle is subjected to extensive testing and tuning. This is where we come into our own. Traffic in major cities means it is virtually impossible to road test a vehicle properly. Luckily we are based in a rural location and have around 5kms of on road test track (The Old Hume Highway) right outside our door. Also, with our ‘rolling road’ dynamometer we are able to accurately simulate road conditions and we use this to extensively test all vehicles that come into our workshop for tuning.
FUEL PUMP REPAIRS AND SERVICING
BAD FUEL:
Poor fuel is an ever increasing problem in this country. If you're doing a lot of travelling and buying fuel from lots of different suppliers you never know what you'll get.
A number of problems are common due to poor fuel quality such as:
BLOCKED OR DAMAGED INJECTORS
Poorly set up, blocked or damaged fuel injectors result in poor vaporisation of the fuel which leads to poor combustion which leads to fuel wastage and engine damage.
Your injectors are the heart of your engine. Without the correct spray pattern the diesel will not burn properly and your vehicle will under perform.
It is important to have your injectors serviced correctly or else everything you do after that will be just trying to correct this basic problem.
POOR FILTRATION AND ENGINE DAMAGE
The Berrima Diesel adaptor ring is simply screwed into place on the standard filter head and then the Lucas/CAV element is simply pushed on.
A threaded rod on the adaptor is used to retain a glass bowl at the base of the filter, allowing the owner to check for the presence of water or other fuel contamination. As we say, "You can't see through the original steel filter!"
The bowl can be drained by simply turning a wing nut at the bottom of the bowl.
The advantages of the Lucas/CAV filter element compared with original or other after-market filters include a much lower price (around $8 instead of up to $90) and availability virtually anywhere in Australia.
Although originally a Lucas/CAV design, the element can also be replaced with similar units such as those produced by Fleetguard, Bosch or Framm.
POORLY SET UP OR LEAKING FUEL PUMPS
Due to increasingly poor fuel being available in Australia we have noticed a number of vehicles having problems with leaking injector pumps.
A number of dealerships have brought near new factory vehicles to us with these problems.
It's amazing how quickly poor fuel can damage an engine. Leaking injector pumps are one of our specialties and with some specialised techniques we have developed we have a 100% success rate in fixing the problem.
